50 Years

In the summer of 1972 Compatriots gathered in Anne Arundel County Maryland and formed a new Chapter in the Maryland Society, Sons of the American Revolution, the John Paul Jones Chapter.  On 14 August 2022, Chapter and State Society Compatriots, their families and guests gathered to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Chapter’s founding.

It was a beautiful sunny summer afternoon under the pavilion overlooking the South River in Historic Londontowne, Maryland. Over 70 attended the celebration including 3 Minutemen, 3 Atlantic Middle States Vice President Generals, 6 Maryland Society Presidents, 7 John Paul Jones Chapter Presidents, and representatives from two Daughters of the American Revolution Chapters, the Peggy Stewart Tea Party and the Bottony Cross Chapters.

The State Society President, Chris May, presented two awards, a 50 year pin to Compatriot William Mitchell and a Chapter Certificate of Commendation to the Honorable Wilson K. Barnes, Sr. who was the force behind the Chapter’s founding while he was the Maryland Society President.  Minuteman Wilson K. Barnes, Jr. accepted the award for his father.

After a delicious meal and a ceremonial cake cutting the celebrants learned a lot about the

Chapter’s namesake John Paul Jones from the Associate Chair of the US Naval Academy History Department, Commander Benjamin Armstrong.  His talk was very illuminating and included many insights into the naval hero we know and the person we did not know as well.

It was a glorious day to celebrate a 50th Anniversary of the Chapter and it really was a time of ‘Good Food’ with ‘Good Friends’ sharing ‘Good Times’.
